  • The Santa Fe Diesel Volume 1:Dieselization-1960 and Volume 2: 1960-1995 (Priest)

Volume One is a detailed and handsomely done history of the Santa Fe's diesel locomotives through 1960. The author covers every model, from the tiny switchers used in the tie and timber yards to the heavy duty freight and passenger engines. The book is arranged by class and includes the various paint schemes and remanufacturing until retirement or merger with BNSF. The first page of each class includes a header with locomotive specifications, including manufacturer, type of engine, horsepower, cylinders, pistons, number owned, years built and number series. The photos, almost all of which are in colour, usually show the view from both the engineer and the fireman's side, the nose and rear, and the roof line. The narrative provides detailed information about each class of engine. Illustrated throughout with colour photos and schematic diagrams.  Volume 2 is a beautifully done full-colour pictorial showing the diesels that Santa Fe acquired between 1960 and 1995. Each class of locomotives, arranged by delivery date, is shown in various paint schemes (including the ill-fated Kodachrome paint scheme, intended for the failed SFSP merger) and with views from both the engineer and fireman's perspective as well as side view, nose, rear and roof line. There is detailed information on the specifications for each class, including manufacturer, type of engine, horsepower, cylinders, pistons, number owned, years built and number series. There is also a narrative describing the history of each class, including dispositions. End papers show map of Albuquerque, NM shops and yard. Now scarce. Paired Rail Productions 1997 & 1998.
