Southern Pacific Historic Diesels is a series of pictorial histories defining the growth and development of the Southern Pacific’s fleet of diesel locomotives. The goal of this series is to publish and present in text and photographs a record of Southern Pacific dieselization since the fleet’s beginnings in the late 1930s. This volume summarizes Southern Pacific's experience with hood units (road switchers) in passenger service, beginning in the early 1950s . Locomotive models addressed in detail are the Fairbanks-Morse Train Masters, ALCO RS-3 (Cotton Belt) and DL-701 (SP), demonstrator and emergency ""protection"" units, as well as Electro-Motive SDP45, GP40P-2, SD7, SD9 and GP9 models .
