Fascinating history of the Northern Ohio Traction and Light Co., an interurban whose rise and decline mirrored that of the larger industry. Its several components were assembled by rival groups around the turn of the century, often with bitter battles over routes and franchises. Once consolidated around 1906, it served a string of towns and citites stretching from Cleveland through Akron and Canton to New Philadelphia and Urichsville. Profitable operations in the teens encouraged expansion and upgrades, including the purchase of steel cars but it was not enough to stave off competition from cars and the economic pressure of the Depression. This well-done volume tells the complete story of the NOT&L as well as that of five connected electric street railways: the Cleveland Alliance and Mahoning Valley Railroad, the Inter-City Rapid Transit, Twin Cities Traction, Stark Electric and the Salem city lines. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs, car blueprints, timetables, rosters of equipment and advertising, schematic diagrams and several maps. 1966 CERA. Bulletin 109 of the Central Electric Railfans Association. Hardcover with dw. Good condition, dw protected with plastic cover.. 270pp.
